Q Magazine History

Q magazine is one of the biggest music magazines in the UK, its aim is to bring all genres of music to everyone. The original founders Mark Ellan and David Hepworth, did not feel that the current media were up to standard at the time, this pushed forward their own magazine called Q magazine. The magazine is targeted to older music listeners who still buy CDs and listen to them, this is because there was a gap in the market for those type of people, allowing Mark Ellan and David Hepworth to fill that gap and leave the other music magazines to target the younger audiences of teen and young adults.

The first issues of Q magazine were subtitled as "The modern guide to music and more" this was because the magazine used the highest quality photos and paper to produce the magazine. Originally the magazine was to be called “Cue” this idea came from the way you cue a record, ready to play, but the name was changed so that it does not get mixed up with a popular snooker magazine and was shortened to just Q in the 200th edition.

Much of Q’s magazine is promoted with all sorts of things, theses could be interviews with music composers and celebrities, or free items such as sample music and Cover-mounted CDs and Books. The magazine also had a very good relationship with Glastonbury music festival, they would produce a free newspaper during the event for everyone to read.

Q magazine started a started a radio show in 2008 it being available online and on TV channels, it was based in Birmingham. The radio station had a complete roster, this Q the 80s with Matthew Rudd and Drivetime with Danielle Perry. The opening of the radio station involved Coldplay giving an exclusive interview with the radio station giving it a boost with listener count. The radio station closed around 2013, this was to free up the bandwidth for various other platforms like the radio station Kiss for its Kisstory.

Q magazine also released a TV channel called “Q TV” the channel was available on all satellite frequencies the in the early 2000s, the channel’s slogan was “Q the music”. The channel would involve band playing music on live TV. The Music channel was shut down the 2012 and replaced with Heat a celebrity gossip channel.

  1. Could have a few more images posted in here - add some front covers or some feature articles - would make it look a bit more interesting.
